Back to Basics: Feed Your Dog the Way Nature Intended

Step into any pet shop, and it’s easy to feel a bit lost. There are shelves full of dog food, with labels shouting about being “grain-free”, “vet-approved”, “complete” or “balanced”, but then you turn the pack over and find an ingredient list full of words you’ve probably never heard of. So, how do you know what’s actually best for your furry friend?

We get it, it can become overwhelming to choose from so many different options promising the same thing. But when we’re already struggling to decide between brands, we forget the most important question: What is your dog naturally meant to eat?

At sure4pets, we have been helping pet owners, not only in Barnsley, but the South Yorkshire area get back to that simple answer, because when it comes to feeding your dog, it doesn’t need to be as complicated as it often seems. Read on to find out what’s best for your dog’s diet today.

Back to their roots

Dogs may share our homes, our sofas, and even our beds, but biologically, they haven’t changed as much as we think. Genetically, the dog (Canis Lupus Familiaris) is very closely related to the wolf (Canis Lupus). The mitochondrial DNA (MTDNA) of dogs is 99.8% identical to that of their ancestors, the grey wolf. Meaning that despite human intervention in breeding dogs throughout the years, they haven’t changed as much as we think. By all scientific standards, anatomy, and evolutionary history, the dog is the domesticated wolf.

On top of this, dogs have the same physiological and nutritional needs as their ancestors, which brings us to the question of: Why do we feed them so differently?

What do their bodies tell us?

One of the simplest ways to understand your dog’s needs is to look at their anatomy. Dogs have teeth designed to rip, tear, and shred food – not grind kibble. Their digestive systems are also built to process raw, protein-rich foods efficiently. Even their stomach acidity is stronger than ours, built to break down raw meat and bone.

These aren’t simply random traits; they are clues pointing to how we should feed our furry friends. There’s a reason dogs’ anatomy is so similar to that of wolves. Look at their anatomy here – it’s almost impossible to tell them apart.

What are we feeding instead?

You might think because your local pet store or supermarket stocks it, it must be safe for your dog to eat, right? Just like humans, it’s just as easy to purchase processed, low-quality food for dogs.

Dry kibble was originally made with convenience in mind. It’s easy to store, simple to serve, and lasts a long time on the shelf. The problem is, it can be very low in natural moisture and often contains lots of carbohydrates and starch, without offering much else. Most dry kibble is only around 10% water, so dogs who mainly eat kibble are likely not getting as much hydration as they need.

When convenience is the biggest selling point, it becomes a question of whether we’re feeding them kibble out of convenience, or what is actually best for them.

What happens when you go back to basics?

Going back to basics isn’t about making things complicated; it’s actually the opposite.

It’s all about feeding in a way that aligns more closely with your dog’s biology. A way of feeding that reflects what their bodies have been designed to process over thousands of years. This is where raw feeding comes in.

Raw feeding – or SARFTM feeding, which stands for species-appropriate raw food – is about feeding your dog in a way that’s as close as possible to what their ancestors would have eaten. The idea behind SARFTM is that fresh, whole, uncooked food can support healthy ageing, better cell oxygenation, metabolism, and renewal.

When you go back to basics, you can expect:
– Clean, healthy white teeth and no need for veterinary cleaning
– 1/5 of the volume of faeces, with no smell
– Higher energy levels
– Silkier, shinier coats
– And plenty more differences, which you can view in our customer stories!

Think about it: in the natural world, animals don’t cook their own food or eat highly processed products like kibble or biscuits. A SARFTM diet is designed to reflect what your dog would eat in nature – supporting normal digestion and helping the body absorb nutrients more effectively. This plays a role in supporting overall health, including healthy cells, circulation, and the body’s natural processes.

What we’ve seen first hand

Sure4pets was birthed when our founder saw, first-hand, how switching to a raw feeding diet changed his dog’s life for the better. Once he experienced the early passing of one of his beloved pets caused by a poor diet and unnecessary treatments, he was determined to find a better way, and that’s how our team came to be.

Over the years, we’ve spoken to countless dog owners who have come to us with concerns surrounding low energy, digestive issues, skin problems and more. And although we understand that every dog is different, one thing we have consistently seen is that when dog owners begin to align their dog’s diet with their natural needs, positive changes often follow.

(Raw) Food for thought

Ultimately, feeding your dog should not feel complicated or confusing. When you understand what their body is naturally designed for, you can confidently make choices that support their long-term health and wellbeing.
