Raw Feeding Puppies

FEEDING NEW BORN PUPS

Firstly and as I’m sure you will be quite aware, puppies, like all animals grow very quickly, leaving very little time to ensure that the foundations of health which are laid down in puppy hood will be good enough to see them through life. Now the problem with using a commercial processed “synthetic food” to grow pups is that this compromises their natural growth rate and development and for a number of reasons.

To fully understand this, we have to remember that all life starts from one single cell, this cell multiplies into trillions to make up a physical structure (the body) which is living, (Organic) a living organ-ism. To ensure any animal thrives in life, from birth to death, the food that is fed/eaten must be able to assimilate with these cells, this can only truly be achieved when a SARF™ Species Appropriate Raw Food is provided, as it is in nature (in the wild).

The digestive system is a processing plant, which uses stomach “acid” to breakdown their (SARF™ diet) solid foods, the minerals/nutrients that are contained in these foods, are extracted and absorbed into the blood, which carries (feeds) them to the cells.

WHY & HOW A SYNTHETIC DIET COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO GROWING PUPPIES

When puppies are fed a processed diet their main energy source will most likely include a lot of carbohydrates, not only this, puppies that are fed a lot of carbohydrates may well become fat and too heavy for their bones. This can then cause damage to joints and tendons or other deformities, these Carbs will provide energy. We are not sustaining the foundations of the physical body which are the trillions of cells that actually make up the physical structure, these trillions of cells all require specific minerals to maintain health and vitality. This cannot be provided when feeding a synthetic packet/tin “food” as the minerals/nutrients that are added are synthetic/fake, inorganic. This is due to the fact that the natural minerals/nutrients are lost in the heating process, heat is used to break down raw foods (as does the animals stomach acid, which allows the minerals/nutrients to be released) this is the reason that in order for any commercial, synthetic food to be sold as complete and balanced, it has to have synthetic (inorganic) minerals/nutrients added.

There are many other issues that pose a risk to the health of not only puppies but dogs and animals in general. A study conducted by the Animal Nutrition Group on the effects of high temperatures and the effects it has on mineral/nutrition revealed that 4mm kibble (biscuit) which is heated at 200 degrees lowered proline, total lysine, reactive lysine concentrations, linolenic and linoleic acid concentrations, and increased oleic acid (Animal Nutrition Group, 2011). The cooking process basically changes the molecular structure of ingredients making it more indigestible and the dogs immune system sees these as foreign, thus their immune system attacks them (Billinghurst, 1993). To add to this 75-80% of health for every and any animal is provided by nutrition, this is due to the fact that 75-80% of the immune system is housed in the gut, the immune system protects the body against virus and bacteria!! Cooked processed dry dog food contains very little moisture, about 10%, and is dehydrating to dogs (Becker, 2012).

BENEFITS FROM GROWING YOUR PUPPIES WITH AN SARF™ DIET

When a pup is fed their SARF™ diet the minerals/nutrients are in their natural organic form without the use or need for carbohydrates, this provides a natural and normal growth rate because
A; their digestive system is specifically and naturally designed to process the minerals the cells of their body needs in order to maintain health and vitality and does not put excess strain and pressure on growing joints from a body mass that has grown too quickly and heavy for its support system – the dog’s bones.

The huge advantage of feeding a SARF™ diet to your pup is that we are feeding the cells of the body and not the stomach. The pup’s energy source will come from the fact we are providing the necessary minerals/nutrients in an organic form as nature intended.

Your puppy’s bone growth is influenced by the ratio of Calcium & Phosphorus intake and the source, when your pup is fed their SARF™ diet which has been designed by Mother Nature specifically for their individual species, the work is done for us.

CALCIUM & PHOSPHOUROUS

Nutritional requirements and the biological systems of animals work best when they are in harmony with each other and not at odds.

The deficiency or over abundance of one vital element can very often affect another.

When Calcium and Phosphorus are sourced from a SARF diet, the dog’s system completely embraces the presentation and the growth of your puppies bones is fuelled by energy sourced from the protein of raw meat… that same meat providing natural phosphorus and the inclusion of raw bone providing calcium, we create a growth system that is correct and sound.

Phosphorus is found in abundance in organ meat and in much lower quantities in muscle meats. Phosphorus directly assists your pup’s bone growth and is responsible for maintaining strong and healthy bones.

Calcium is found in abundance in raw bone, bone also contains a little phosphorus, the meatier the bone, the more phosphorus is present. By feeding the less meaty bones, you are providing more calcium.

BACK TO THE ORIGIN AND THE WILD

Dogs are now classified scientifically as Canis lupus familiaris by the Smithsonian Institute (Wayne, R.K. “What is a Wolfdog?” www.fiu.edu/~milesk/Genetics.htm), placing them in the same species as the gray wolf, Canis lupus. Dogs are so much like wolves physiologically that they are frequently used in wolf studies as a physiological model for wolf body processes (Mech, L.D. 2003. Wolves: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation). The mitochondria, basically is how the body process food and turns it into energy growth and sustainable life. Although we have changed the appearance of dogs and have domesticated them, we have done nothing to change their internal anatomy, function and nutritional requirements.

When wolves and wild dogs have been studied, the first three to four weeks, puppies live on their mother’s milk. I’m sure you will be aware of phantom pregnancies which in many cases milk can often be produced, this is the beauty of nature – which never fails to fascinate me, because this allows another bitch from the same pack to take over if anything happens to mum during the pregnancy. Female wolves and dogs have the ability to produce milk even if they haven’t given birth. This milk not only provides all the nourishment required but also assists in the initial development of each puppy’s immune system and ultimately helps to build the foundations for protection against virus and bacteria.

GROWING YOUR PUPPIES ON THEIR SARF DIET

Once the weaning process is in full swing and depending on the litter size and of course the age of the pups. We advise feeding 10% of their body weight per day divided into 4 -6 meals per day, however with larger litters you can give mum free choice of the amount she eats so she can keep up with her energy demands.

Ultimately what we try to achieve with all our customers is to help you mimic the way these animals would eat naturally, which is why we also advise presenting raw chicken or duck wings at around 3 weeks old too. They may not consume them but they will become familiar with the taste, it will also give them a little experience in chewing, which is all part of their development.

We are driven to help pets live longer, happier and healthier lives with raw food.
